-- this is the link to the Herald story ........................

As families of those dealing with ASD everyday we can all empathise with the way in which situations get out of hand - the police and justice system clearly need more systems in place for those with ASD - this is wrong at every level ................

Update Thursday 10 ..............http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10711260................
- Simon returns to Auckland tomorrow and awaits the trial - what does this injustice highlight - a total lack of awareness and knowledge within our legal, police and justice systems - 1 in 100 individuals have an ASD diagnosis, yet three professional bodies have no guidelines to recognise this disorder - change is required to protect those with disabilities from abuse from those who should recognise this disorder - intervention and protection is required - not heavy handedness and misreading of a situation - this one incident may take Cornelius Arie Smith-Voorkamp a lifetime to recover - the very professionals that should have recognised him - failed him miserably - their fault NO - you can't recognise what you have "no clue" about - but where to from here - lets learn from this and pledge to care enough to up skill those who are required to think clearly in stressful circumstances so that those with ASD are recognised and protected ................... talking to Simon today, he had this to say .....................The issue of Arie being portrayed as the face of looting highlights a
huge hole in the Support of ASD people within the law. With Judith
Collins as Minister of Police apparently advocating suspending the
rule of law, the climate is not in favour of supporting those on the autistic spectrum.
Autism House is advocating for the establishment of guidelines and
procedures for those who work in the enforcement and legal
professions. In Arie's case, some of these professionals were terrible
and even violent, but the vast majority were fantastic. However,
hardly anyone knew about how to deal with people with Autism.

LATEST UPDATE AUGUST 2011 - well done to Simon Buckingham who was first lawyer on the scene to help Arie -
we do trust that the police and legal system will now listen to an adult lawyer with Aspergers in advice and training re those on the Autism Spectrum.

ABA PAID INSURANCE COMPANIES IN USA

Autism Insurance Bill is passed17 Feb 2011 09:03:51A bill that has been fought over for years is closer to becoming a reality

Last Thursday, the House of Delegates passed the bill that would require insurance companies to cover therapy for those diagnosed with autism.  Right now, ABA therapy is capped at 30 thousand dollars a year for three years following a diagnosis.  After that, ABA therapy is capped at two thousand a month until the individual turns 18.

The Bill is now in the hands of the Senate, who Delegate Mary Poling thinks will pass it.  She also believes it will make a big difference i the lives of autism patients.

Poling said, "I think it's important if we don't treat the children with autism early, then they will become our responsibility later when they are not functioning as a productive citizens and taxpayers and family members, early intervention is the key there and that's what this bill would do."

The day the House passed the bill, Poling read a letter to her fellow delegates from Alyssa Leach, who is a senior at Elkins High School.  The letter read:

"Families who can't afford the cost aren't able to get all the services that may benefit their child.  This is a big mistake that shouldn't be happening because therapies are almost always a necessity for children with autism."

"Children who have had ABA therapy at an early age are able to learn in a regular classroom setting because the therapy has taught them how to preform everyday tasks and how to have self control."
